What Does 14-14-14 Fertilizer Mean?

14-14-14 represents the NPK ratio meaning this fertilizer has 14% Nitrogen, 14% Phosphorus, and 14% Potassium; the rest can be distributed in different types of nutrients or minerals depending on the fertilizer brand.

14-14-14 Fertilizer Application Rate  

Your fertilizer will usually bring the information regarding the application rate, but if you don’t have it, use the industry standard, which is 1lb fertilizer per 1000 square feet.

So to get the application rate, this is the formula you should follow. (Make sure to convert the Nitrogen percentage into decimal).

1lb fertilizer x 1000 sq ft = 1000 / 0.14 = 7.1 lb of 14-14-14 fertilizer is needed to cover 1000 square feet.

As you see, all you have to do is multiply the 1lb of fertilizer by the square feet, then divide the results by the Nitrogen number converted into decimal. 

How to Apply 14-14-14 Fertilizer?

You will have to decide if you’re going to use a granular spreader or diluted in water and use a liquid fertilizer sprayer. Either way is fine; just make sure to apply the fertilizer in an even way throughout the garden or plants. 

For me, the granular spreader it’s much easier to use.

With the application rate, you will know how many pounds of fertilizer you need to cover the square feet you have available. Here is how it works.

How to Dilute 14-14-14 Fertilizer?

This could vary a lot depending on the amount of fertilizer you’re going to use, but your fertilizer setting or label will tell you how much water you need for x amount of fertilizer. 

But again, if you don’t have it available, you will typically use 1 to 2 cups of fertilizer for each gallon of water; this is not an exact science, but it works as a reference.

Also, consider that it could take up to 24 hours for the fertilizer to dissolve depending on the fertilizer brand.

How Often Should You Use the 14-14-14 Fertilizer?

The best time to fertilize is when your plants are leafing, flowering, or going through a new growth which usually happens in spring.

But this could also vary depending on whether the plants are indoor or outdoor and if you’re just trying to fertilize your lawn.

Spring, Summer, and Fall are the seasons for fertilizing, and you will do it as often as your plants and lawn need it, especially for lawns.

Also, some types of plants love slow-release fertilizers, so you won’t have to fertilize as often.

The only difference between the 14-14-14 fertilizer and the others is that they have a higher NPK ratio.

So if you need more Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium, the 15-15-15 fertilizer is a great option, or if you want to go even higher, go with the 20-20-20 fertilizer.
