In this article, we talk about the 46-0-0 fertilizer and when you should use it. This fertilizer is one of the highest Nitrogen values in the market, so it should be used with purpose. It’s not a typical day-to-day fertilizer if there is such a thing.

What Does 46-0-0 Fertilizer Mean?

The numbers you see in your fertilizer represent the NPK ratio which is the percentage of Nitrogen, Phosphorus, and Potassium.

In the case of this fertilizer, it only contains Nitrogen with 46%, while Phosphorus and Potassium are 0 %.

Nitrogen (N)is used when you’re looking to provide growth and beautiful green colors for your plants. 

Phosphorus (P) helps develop the roots of your plants by strengthening them.

Potassium (K) can help your plants keep vigorous, fight diseases and fight extreme temperatures.

46-0-0 Fertilizer Application Rate  

You can typically find the application rate in your fertilizer products, but if for some reason you don’t have it available, you can find out the application rate by using the industry standard of 1lb fertilizer per 1000 sq ft. 

You can do this calculation with the Nitrogen ratio converter into decimal.

For example 

1lb fertilizer x 1000 sq ft = 1000 / 0.46 = 2.1 lb 46-0-0 fertilizer is needed to cover 1000 sq ft. 

How Much 46-0-0 Fertilizer per Acre?

To Know how many pounds you need per acre, all you have to do is get the results from our previous example and multiply it by the representation of 1 acre in sq ft, then divided by 1000 sq ft. 

For example, 

2.1 lb fertilizer x 43,560 sq ft = 91,476 / 1000 sq ft = 91 lb of fertilizer if need to cover 1 acre.

46-0-0 Fertilizer Spreader Settings

Again your fertilizer or spreader will tell you the necessary spreader setting, but if you don’t have it available, you can use the industry standard of ⅓ of your spreader opening and work from there.  

Another tip is to set it up to the point the biggest particles of your fertilizer are able to come out, making sure it barely fits. 

When to Apply 46-0-0 Fertilizer?

This fertilizer can be used during spring, summer, or fall but what’s most important is to use it when it is most necessary for your lawn or plants. 

This fertilizer has a specific and single purpose: provide extreme growth, so when you need that, you should use it and obviously give it time to see the results. 

Also, sometimes you have part of your lawn that hasn’t grown properly. This is a great occasion to use it.

Can 46-0-0 Fertilizer Be Mixed With Water?

Yes, you can definitely mix this fertilizer with water, especially if the brand of your fertilizer is promoting it. Which they typically do. 

This is a great option to have, especially when you have a small garden or you want to fertilize a particular plant. 

34-0-0 fertilizer vs 46-0-0 fertilizer

Both of these fertilizers are a great option to use if you’re in need of a high volume of Nitrogen.

The big difference between these two is that the 46-0-0 fertilizer has a higher nitrogen ratio.

So basically, if you’re looking for a higher ratio of Nitrogen, the 46-0-0 fertilizer is the option you have to use. 

But at the end of the day, there isn’t too much difference since you adjust the amount of fertilizer your using in your lawn or garden if needed with a 34-0-0 fertilizer.

You can typically buy this fertilizer at Walmart, Home Depot, lowes, or amazon.

Mom and pops shops that have a lawn and care area are also a great option.

But the price of the 46-0-0 fertilizer ranges between 15-90 USD. 

Is 46-0-0 Fertilizer Explosive? 

Under normal circumstances, this fertilizer is safe to use; just make sure to avoid having it under extreme temperature conditions or direct sunlight.
